Position Title:  Director of School Health Services

Initial Assignment:  District Health Services Office

General Description:  The Director of School Health Services - Administers all aspects of the health services program for the District.  

Primary Responsibility:  Ensure that school health offices are equipped with highly trained staff and necessary resources.  Acts as School Medical Director, consultant, and liaison for the district in all matters related to the health services program.

Qualifications:

This position is governed by Erie County Civil Service.  The civil service title is “Nurse Practitioner - Schools.”  The position is filled through the “Continuous Recruitment” process, which does not involve a written examination.  A candidate must be able to satisfactorily establish that they meet the following qualifications for appointment:

  1. New York State Licensure

    1. Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State; AND

    2. Current New York State Education Department Certification as a Nurse Practitioner with a specialty area of pediatrics, family medicine, or school health;

AND

  1. Experience - Either:

    1. One year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in pediatrics, family medicine, or school health; OR

    2. Two years of Registered Professional Nursing experience in pediatrics, family medicine, or school health. 

AND

  1. Transcripts must be submitted at time of application

AND

  1. Erie County residency requirements must be met 

Performance Responsibilities:

Health Services Program

  • Directly supervises RNs and LPNs at 17 locations that include District buildings as well as other sites within the District that are staffed by Ken-Ton Nurses (e.g. parochial schools). 

  • Exercise strong leadership skills, including but not limited to:  clear and effective written and oral communication skills; conflict management and resolution skills; ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders; communication with compassion and empathy

  • Design coverage plans, agency collaboration, and secure agency staffing of all school building health offices and 1:1 student nursing needs.

  • Ensure compliance with county, state and federal regulations regarding school health services for students.

  • Collaborate with school personnel in the interpretation of laws and regulations in regard to school health.

  • Assist in the development and articulation of Board of Education policies, procedures, and District protocols for student health needs.

  • Conduct interviews for Nursing staff and make recommendations for hiring.

  • Provide initial training and ongoing professional development for Nursing staff.

  • Complete annual performance reviews for Nursing staff.

  • Writes standing orders for medications such as epinephrine and ensures that district has appropriate stock

  • Coordinates the completion of mandated reporting to NYSDOH (e.g. immunizations, BMI).  

  • Assists in the development and implementation of health education and prevention programs.  

  • Participates in District wellness program/committee

General Care

  • To act as the liaison between the District and the student's personal healthcare providers to discuss a student’s medical/health concerns.

  • Review and sign scripts for occupational and physical therapy when necessary. 

  • Review medical histories and documentation for student accommodations. 

  • Performs mandated school health appraisals, student working paper physicals, and sports physicals. 

  • Reviews medical documentation and communicates with physician(s) for employee accommodations.  

Students with Special Needs

  • Collaborate with district or building administrators, teachers, staff, related service providers, school nurses, special education directors regarding student health matters pertaining to their educational setting.  

  • Advise the Committee on Special Education on appropriate accommodations for students with medical/health needs.

  • Consult with the Committee on Special Education/504 team(s) in the development and implementation of student health care plans and to communicate with the student’s healthcare provider(s) for needed clarification.

Athletics

  • Provide consultation to school-based teams, coaches, athletic directors for athletes after injury and/or severe illness to determine fitness for further competition. 

  • Work with the Athletic Department for concussion clearances and the athletic placement process.

  • Other duties as assigned 

Contract:  12-month CORE schedule (non-represented)

Salary:  Starting range of $110,000 - $130,000, commensurate with experience
