Hours - 8 hours per day (40 hours per week), 11am-7:30pm and 11:30am-8pm (variation based on seasonal needs). Full-time CORE duty schedule.
A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST MEET THE ERIE COUNTY CIVIL SERVICE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (BELOW) AT TIME OF APPLICATION AND APPOINTMENT. FOR PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT, THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT MUST BE QUALIFIED TO TAKE THE ERIE COUNTY CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION WHEN MADE AVAILABLE. FOR PERMANENT APPOINTMENT, THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST HOLD THE TITLE OF SECURITY OFFICER OR MUST BE CANVASSED AND REACHABLE FROM THE EXISTING ERIE COUNTY CIVIL SERVICE LIST.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and: 1. Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a major in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Police Science or closely related field; or 2. One (1) year of experience as a security guard, military policeman or law enforcement officer; or 3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be prorated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
Special Requirements: Registration as a Security Guard by the State of New York, Department of State, Division of Licensing Services and completion of an eight (8) hour training course pursuant to Article 7 and 7 A General Business Law. Security guards employed by December 31, 1993, may continue employment pending registration on the following schedule: Those hired in an even year must be registered during 1994 by their anniversary date of hire; those hired in an odd year must be registered during 1995 by their anniversary date of hire. Security guards hired after December 31, 1993, must register immediately for employment or already be registered. Must be in possession of a valid New York State driver's license.
Duties of Assignment: This is a year-round full-time position that will involve high school building security work and security duties at off-site District sports fields, which may involve a significant amount of outdoor work. The work involves providing security for buildings and property to ensure protection of students, staff, and the visiting public. This is a para-professional security position responsible for patrolling and monitoring the activities within school facilities and adjoining areas to ensure the safety of employees, students and the visiting public. The work involves building relationships with students and staff to promote a safe environment. The incumbent is responsible for identifying potentially dangerous situations and taking appropriate action to address security concerns and prevent or minimize danger, injury, and disruption to school operations. The incumbent receives direct supervision from administration, the district-wide Senior Security Officer (if applicable), and any armed officer assigned to the building. The incumbent must exercise appropriate judgment in emergency situations and when supervision is not available. Does related work as required or assigned by administration, the district-wide Senior Security Officer (if applicable), and any armed officer assigned to the building.
Special Qualifications: Good knowledge of the practices and procedures used to ensure the maintenance or order and security in school/public buildings and school/public grounds; good knowledge of law enforcement regulations pertaining to theft, assault, trespass and harassment; working knowledge of fire safety practices; skilled in the use of first aid; skilled in the use of fire extinguishers and related fire fighting equipment; ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively with others; ability to be firm with students, staff, and visitors as necessary; ability to maintain harmonious relationships with students, staff, and visitors; ability to work independently; tact; courtesy; dependability; resourcefulness; even-temper. *Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position including, but not limited to, ability to spend long periods of time standing or walking, strength, agility, flexibility. *Experience with weapons detection screening using the OpenGate system is preferred. *Experience working with youth is preferred.
Typical Work Activities: Patrol and inspect buildings plus adjoining areas, and off-site District sports fields, to ensure the security of employees, students, visitors and property; Assist with screening entry to buildings using the OpenGate system; Conduct searches as directed; Provide verbal direction and utilize de-escalation tactics with students to avoid verbal or physical altercations; Utilize specialized training and skills when necessary to provide physical intervention and restraint; Conducts investigations concerning loss of property, completing all required reports; Performs daily documentation duties such as logging incidents; May operate equipment such as, but not limited to, security camera systems, fire alarm systems, radio communication systems, and defensive equipment; Responds to alarms of fire and performs duties necessary to protect life and property, including the use of fire suppression apparatus and evacuation of staff, students and visitors; Responds to emergency situations and controls vehicles and/or pedestrian traffic; Furnishes information and assistance to visitors, contractors and employees; Enforces policies and procedures; Prepares depositions and reports necessary to all activities performed, as required.
Additional Training Desired: Updated CPR, 1st Aid and AED certification; Updated Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI) training. * This training is not required for initial employment in this position but will be considered to support one’s candidacy.
